چکیده

Higher-dimensional orthogonal packing problems have a wide range of practical applications, including packing, cutting, and scheduling. Previous efforts for exact algorithms have been unable to avoid structural problems that appear for instances in twoor higher-dimensional space. We present a new approach for modeling packings, using a graph-theoretical characterization of feasible packings. Our characterization allows it to deal with classes of packings that share a certain combinatorial structure, instead of having to consider one packing at a time. In addition, we can make use of elegant algorithmic properties of certain classes of graphs. This allows our characterization to be the basis for a successful branch-and-bound framework. This is the first in a series of papers describing new approaches to higher-dimensional packing.

An Interval Graph-based Tabu Search Framework for Multi-dimensional Packing

Packing is a vast and continuously growing field in the area of Operations Research and Combinatorial Optimization. Roughly speaking, given a set of items and a set of containers, packing problems are concerned with the loading of the items into the containers, according to some packing rules and optimizing a performance measure. Under this broad definition, we find a wide set of real-life and ...

Lower-dimensional Relaxations of Higher-dimensional Orthogonal Packing

Consider the feasibility problem in higher-dimensional orthogonal packing. Given a set I of d-dimensional rectangles, we need to decide whether a feasible packing in a d-dimensional rectangular container is possible. No item rotation is allowed and item edges are parallel to the coordinate axes. Typically, solution methods employ some bounds to facilitate the decision. Various bounds are known,...

FORM FINDING FOR RECTILINEAR ORTHOGONAL BUILDINGS THROUGH CHARGED SYSTEM SEARCH ALGORITHM

Preliminary layout design of buildings has a substantial effect on the ultimate design of structural components and accordingly influences the construction cost. Exploring structurally efficient forms and shapes during the conceptual design stage of a project can also facilitate the optimum integrated design of buildings. This paper presents an automated method of determining column layout desi...

MPQ-trees for orthogonal packing problem

Finding a feasible solution for a bi-dimensional Orthogonal Packing Problem (OPP2) consists in deciding whether a set of rectangular boxes (items) can be packed in a ”big” rectangular container without overlapping. The rotation of items is not allowed. In this paper we present a new algorithm for solving OPP-2, based on the characterization of solutions using interval graphs proposed by Fekete ...
